The colorful harbour of Luzzi

Today I bring you to the small island of Malta, and precisely to the colorful harbour of Marsaxlokk. And do you know what makes this bay so original and wonderful? Its typical boats, those that the Maltese call "Luzzi".

The Luzzu is a fishing boat painted bright colors, particularly in shades of red, yellow, green and blue, and sometimes with the distinction of having two small eyes painted on the bow, a legacy of the ancient Phoenician and Greek ships. In fact, it seems to have come to the Maltese Islands about 3,000 years ago, with the arrival of the Phoenicians from Lebanon. If you go into Malta and Gozo islands, you will find them moored in every harbour, but only here, in Marsaxlokk, can you see so many together, spots of color that create a colorful impressionist painting. You can indulge in taking photographs at any hour of the day, although as always the sunset gives the best show. But don't forget to sit in one of the many restaurants that overlook the harbor, and enjoy the sweet slowness of this place, the cry of seagulls and the smell of dried salt, while you enjoying a delicious fish dish, naturally fresh.

Oggi vi porto nell'isola di Malta, e più precisamente nel coloratissimo porto di Marsaxlokk. E sapete cosa rende originale e meravigliosa questa piccola insenatura? Sono le sue tipiche imbarcazioni, quelle che i maltesi chiamano "Luzzi". 

Il Luzzu è un'imbarcazione da pesca dai colori vivaci, soprattutto nelle tonalità del rosso, del giallo, del verde e del blu, e con la particolarità di avere talvolta due piccoli occhi dipinti sulla prua, un'eredità delle antiche navi fenice e greche. Infatti pare sia giunto nelle isole maltesi circa 3.000 anni fa proprio con l'arrivo dei fenici dal Libano. Se vi recate nelle isole di Malta e Gozo lo troverete ormeggiato in ogni porto, ma solo qui, a Marsaxlokk, ne potrete vedere così tanti insieme, macchie di colore che creano un variopinto quadro impressionista. Potrete sbizzarrirvi con le fotografie a qualsiasi ora del giorno, anche se come sempre il tramonto regala lo spettacolo migliore. Non dimenticate però di sedervi in uno dei numerosi ristoranti che danno sul porto a godervi la dolce lentezza di questo luogo, il verso dei gabbiani e l'odore di salsedine, mentre gustate un delizioso piatto di pesce, naturalmente fresco.
