Japan is a country very difficult to talk about, so different from other countries and for this perhaps so fascinating because of this. It's impossible to catch all facets of it, you should live there for a little time, and perhaps you could understand in part these ancient and wonderful people. In some ways, I think that this photo contains in a single shot the essence of Japanese culture.
I was in Kyoto, at the famous Kinkaku-ji, the "Temple of the Golden Pavilion". This awesome pagoda was built in 1397 as a villa for the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and after is death, in 1408, was transformed into a Zen temple by his son. It's located in the north-west of the town, next to a lake and surrounded by a beautiful park. This young couple caught my eye, and so, while they were photographing the golden temple, I was photographing them. A brief moment that contained tenderly an essential concept in Japanese culture: devotion. Not only religious and cultural devotion for a sacred monument, but also devotion to their traditions, represented by the kimono, the Japanese national dress, and devotion to love, caught in a simple gesture of affection. Religion, culture, history, tradition, love: the raw materials with which it was modeled man, so strongly felt in modern Japan.
Il Giappone è un paese assai complesso da raccontare, così diverso dagli altri Paesi e forse per questo così affascinante. E' impossibile coglierne tutte le sfaccettature, bisognerebbe viverci per un po' di tempo, e forse solo allora riusciremmo a comprendere in parte questo popolo millenario e meraviglioso. Credo tuttavia che questa fotografia in qualche modo racchiuda in una sola inquadratura l'essenza della cultura giapponese.
Mi trovavo a Kyoto, al celebre Kinkaku-ji, il "Tempio del padiglione d'oro". Questa splendida pagoda fu costruita nel 1397 come villa per lo Shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu e dopo la sua morte, nel 1408, venne in seguito trasformata in un tempio Zen da suo figlio. Si trova a nord-ovest della città, accanto ad un lago e circondato da un bellissimo parco. Questa giovane coppia aveva attirato il mio sguardo e così, mentre loro fotografavano il tempio dorato io immortalavo loro. Un breve istante che racchiudeva teneramente un concetto essenziale nella cultura giapponese: la devozione. Non solo la devozione religiosa e culturale verso un monumento sacro, ma anche la devozione per le proprie tradizioni rappresentate dal kimono, il costume nazionale giapponese, e la devozione verso l'amore colto in un semplice gesto d'affetto. Religione, cultura, storia, tradizione, amore: le materie prime con cui è stato modellato l'uomo, così fortemente sentite nel Giappone moderno.
